MADONNA : Vogue
Without doubt one of the finest pOp releases of the 20th century.
The song was right, the clip was right, the artist was right, the time was most definitely right. ‘Vogue’, in all it’s stylish glory single-handedly dragged a (then underground) style of dance kicking and screaming into the club mainstream. The song spoke to the masses, topping charts across the globe and in the process selling more than six million copies. It was danceable, it was accessible and the clip was not only extraordinarily stylish, it provoked criticism and discussion (not least because of Madge’s see-through top). It was sexy, bold, black & white, it featured one of the most recognizable dance sequences of the past 40 years, and stills from the clip became and will forever be enshrined as iconic Madonna imagery.
And even though it was originally written to be a b-side for ‘Keep It Together’, after 18 years ‘Vogue’ still stands up as one of the most extraordinary pOp songs of all time.
