As many (including us here at •auspOp•) had predicted last week, US recording sensation Katy Perry has tonight pOpped into the Australian number one spot on the ARIA singles chart. Her position at the top spot makes her only the second artist in Australian chart history to hit No.1 on downloads alone, behind Rihanna’s ‘Don’t Stop The Music’ earlier this year. Her position on top appears safe for the time being too, with the CD single being released into stores over the weekend, EMI cleverly fast-tracking it’s release. Though perhaps disappointingly for singles buyers, the local pressing features only two tracks – the radio edit and instrumental. At the same time, responding to buyer demand, some retailers are importing copies of Katy’s album ‘One Of The Boys’ from the US and selling them for as little as $14.99, well below the predicted Australian RRP. The official Australian release date for the album remains at August 02.
