Gravelly-voiced soul legend Isaac Hayes has died in his home outside Memphis. Beyond being the voice of the lovable character ‘Chef’ in South Park, Hayes hit the big time in the 1970s as writer and performer, his ‘Theme From Shaft’ becoming a No.1 hit in the US and picking up Academy, Grammy and Golden Globe Awards along the way. As a writer, he co-penned the single ‘Soul Man’ for Sam & Dave as well as the classic ‘Hold On, I’m Coming’. As the South Park character ‘Chef’, Hayes picked up a top 20 hit here in Australia and a UK No.1 with the single ‘Chocolate Salty Balls’. Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame in 2002 and into the Songwriters Hall Of Fame four years later, Hayes passed away this morning aged 65.
