BILLIE : Because We Want To
Now here’s the weird thing… Ten years ago, Billie Piper first burst onto the music scene as a green 15 year old with her debut single ‘Because We Want To’ (video featured below). Then in 2005, she scored a role in the BBC TV series ‘Doctor Who’, playing Rose Tyler opposite ‘the doctor’. But what’s weird is the opening sequence of this video – in which Billie arrives in the backstreets of (let’s say) Birmingham not by double decker bus or a local taxi, not even a donkey… NO! She arrives by means of a UFO!!! Now if that’s not a ‘worlds collide’ career kinda moment, we don’t know what is. Alas, the video clip continues onwards, with Billie befriending a number of locals who clearly don’t suspect she’s from another planet. Not even when she uses her strange extra-terrestrial powers to turn a dust bin (trash can, for our American readers) into a silver liquid-man do the hapless locals suspect a thing, choosing instead to join her for a well-choreographed dance routine! Then, when she brings a billboard to life, the clearly gormless locals just stand by in awe, not pausing for a moment to question how in the world some mere mortal could possess such magical ability. She then conjures up her own nightclub, creating a suited rhinocerose as the bouncer in what is clearly an obvious attempt to see just how dumb said locals are. But, surprise surprise! They follow her like sheep into the nightclub, completely unawares that within, Billie will begin to perform all sorts of alien trickery upon them! Thankfully the clip comes to an end before the probing begins, but all we can sit back now in our comfortable loungechair and wonder how in the world the talented little vixen got away with it all?
