We don’t know what’s going on at Universal Music of late, but they seem to be gobbling up independent record labels at the rate of three a year! Following ABC Music, Modular, Ministry Of Sound and Eleven’s defection to the Universal camp, it’s been announced today that Liberation has also joined the UMA family. The promotions side of the Liberation/Universal partnership will remain with the Liberation team, while after six years, distribution will move from Warner Music to Universal. Liberation CEO Michael Gudinski said of the new relationship, “While we’re looking forward, with great excitement, to working with Universal on our label acts, I also see this as the beginning of a greater strategic between Universal and other divisions of the Mushroom Group”. Who knows what the Universal empire will absorb next, but given they already have an expansive line-up of artists on their roster, they may just have to hire extra staff to cope with the promotion of them all.
