MERCURY4 : Get Me Some
We don’t know quite why Aussie boyband Mercury4 didn’t make it in the big bad world of pOp, but after three singles, they pulled up stumps (sorry, cricketing analogy), packed up their bat and ball and went home. Mercury4 was launched with much hype from BMG with this, their debut single. It was very international in it’s sound at the time and the film clip ticked all the boxes when it came to fitting in with the boyband stereotype – handsome young men, supers of the boys’ names, choreography and the obligatory flashes of flesh. We remember wondering whether Cole really was as young as he said he was, we remember thinking it was very ‘5ive’ in it’s sound, but all in all, we remember liking what we saw and heard.
So why didn’t they work? Perhaps it was the line-up change after just two singles (Javier left, replaced by Kevin), perhaps it was the unnecessary cover version for single No.3 (Bobby Brown’s ‘Every Little Step’)? Who knows, but for a very short time in 2003-2004, Mercury4 rocked our world.
