We’ve already given this person a nod for one of the best pOp albums of 2008, so there’s no way we’d be overlooking him for a piece of pOp brilliance like this, the track that took him from relative obscurity to global success with a driving beat, electro leanings and the most sparkling LED vest you’re ever likely to see.
And though the guy who’s getting the gong for pOp single of the year is an expat Aussie, we’re still more than happy to claim him as our own, particularly when he belts out pOp gems like this;
No.1 – SAM SPARRO : BLACK AND GOLD
Right from the fade-in opening of the track, as it builds into a now all-too-familiar driving bassline and Sam’s velvety vocals, you know this track is one that will connect with people the world over. pOp newcomer Sam Sparro, a former Sydney-sider, tells that the song is about God and believing in a higher power, “I look up into the night sky and see a thousand eyes staring back, but all around these golden beacons I see nothing but black”. And don’t get us started on that video, where he arrives in a black stretch before turning on his pOp masterstroke – an LED lit vest. Genius. If we were to believe in a higher pOp power, we think that in 2008 we found him – and we’re now most definitely disciples of the all powerful, so soulful, Mister Sam Sparro.
