WESTLIFE : Flying Without Wings
Here at auspOp, we’re unashamed fans of the odd boyband or two and Irish outfit Westlife has certainly been no exception throughout it’s ten year history. There’s been the loss of one of the band’s members, the ‘coming out’ of another, babies, marriages and more cover versions than we could possibly hope to mention. But it was their 1999 single ‘Flying Without Wings’ that for us rates as one of their very best moments. Re-recorded as a duet for Mexican release and again for a Korean release, the track was also covered by American Idol’s Ruben Studdard as his debut single in 2003. Songwriting team Steve Mac and Wayne Hector should be extraordinarily proud of ‘Flying Without Wings’ – it goes down in our books a one of those unforgettable, stirring pOp anthems that ought to be heard throughout the world for all time.
