Our apologies for the lateness of our Chart Watch this week – we made a bit of a boo-boo with the publishing times and it’s only made it’s way online now…
SINGLES : Lady Gaga remains atop the Aussie singles chart for another week with her second single ‘Poker Face’ – but for how long!? Jessica Mauboy has bulleted her way into the No.2 position this week with her Rihanna-esque second single ‘Burn’, an eight place jump on last week’s placing. Natalie Bassingthwaighte too moves up with her debut ‘Alive’ moving up from No.12 to No.8 on the eve of release of her second single (which is now in-store). Kevin Rudolf also hits the top ten for the first time with his collaborative single ‘Let It Rock’. Further down the list, The Fray lands with a big bang in the No.15 position with new single ‘You Found Me’ while experimental dance act Empire Of The Sun and their song ‘Walking On A Dream’ refuse to die, moving back up the charts into the No.21 slot (up from No.29 last week). MGMT make a jump, Lily Allen puts ‘The Fear’ back into the singles chart (very nice at No.29) and further down there are debuts for Lady Gaga (No.38), Rhys (No.42) and Kanye West (No.49).
PHYSICAL SINGLES : Suddenly, Beyonce’s ‘Single Ladies’ is counting in the physical singles chart (have they made this the ‘A-side’ without telling us!?) and it plops in quite nicely at No.4 this week. But there are also some more juicy moves to see the top ten occupied by a further three big movers. No.6 belongs to Kevin Rudolf (up from No.15), The Ian Carey Project is up to No.8 (up from No.16) and the Pussycat Dolls come in at No.9 (up from No.14). Nat Bassingthwaighte’s new single ‘Someday Soon’ benefits from some late-week (and early physical) sales, launching in at No.14, a position above her previous hit ‘Alive’. Tame Impala, meanwhile, bullets an impressive 19 places to be at No.19 this week with latest, self-titled single and Antony & The Johnsons sneak back in (only just) at the No.50 position with their ‘Another World’ EP.
DIGITAL TRACKS : It’s here on the digital charts where little Jessica Mauboy has a No.1 hit on her hands, dethroning the once all-conquering Lady Gaga’s ‘Poker Face’. Nat Bassingthwaighte’s ‘Alive’ hits a new peak of No.7, while it’s here The Fray are finding favour with Australian audiences, ‘You Found Me’ comfortably debuting at No.13. Lily Allen jumps in at No.31 with ‘The Fear’, Lady Gaga presents her third single ‘Eh Eh (Nothing More I Can Say)’ at No.37 and the ‘So You Think You Can Dance’ television promotion spots pays dividends for the Global Deejays – their version of the Rozalla hit ‘Everybody’s Free’ hits the No.39 spot.
ALBUMS : And over on the albums chart, it’s a second week on top for the Kings Of Leon – in fact, the top eight positions on the ARIA albums chart remain completely unchanged this week. No.9 now belongs to the soundtrack to Channel 7’s hit series ‘Packed To The Rafters’, while No.10 is the former No.9 in The Presets’ ‘Apocalypso’. Akon’s ‘Freedom’ continues it’s power towards the top, moving up to No.24, Empire Of The Sun too seems to be recapturing the country’s attention, moving up 12 places to No.30. And the auspOp album of the year for 2008, ‘Ladyhawke’ re-emerges in the charts after her star turns at a variety of summer festivals, coming in at No.41.
