With an organic coll-aboration between creators Jamie Catto and Duncan Bridgeman, along with Maxi Jazz and Robbie Williams, 1 Giant Leap burst onto the world music scene in 2002 with a single called ‘My People’. Seven years on, Jamie and Duncan are again about to unleash their blend of organic music onto a mostly dull pOp planet. The ‘What About Me’ project began four years ago, and has since visited an astonishing 50 locations across five continents, drawing on some of the music world’s biggest names in the process. Think REM’s Michael Stipe, think k.d.Lang and Will Young, Carlos Santana and Alanis Morissette are mentioned, along with Faithless’ Maxi Jazz once again.
The album is created by taking a simple piece of pre-composed backing track and visiting artists all around the world, who build the song layer by layer, adding instrumentation, lyrics and music in the process. Each of the 15 pieces of music has developed and grown over the four year process. Even Chinese rappers, Bedouin Musicians, Gabonese Pygmies and Tuvan throat singers lend their individual talents to the project. It’s world music in the very truest sense of the term.
‘What About Me’ the album is set for release on March 06.
