We love them, we really do, but leading Australian music retailer JB Hifi will no longer stock CD singles from the start of next month. In a letter sent to record companies, the retailer states “The sales for this format have declined steadily over the last 12 months to a level where it no longer makes sense from a business perspective or customer service perspective to continue with the format.” While we can’t really blame them (the No.1 single from the Black Eyed Peas sold less than 1000 physical singles nationally last week), we think it’s a very sad day when the format is virtually being forced into oblivion by one of the last retail chains to actually stock them. It’s unclear as to whether or not JB Hifi will continue to sell the format from their website.

Australia record companies have been ripping off us for years. Overseas you can buy maxi-cds with heaps of remixes on the cd singles, yet here you get a 1 to 3 track cd single. No wonder a lot of people buy import cds and/or download music. If only they’d make them more value for money, people would have a reason to buy them. It seems that over the last few years the reduction of tracks on the cd single is disproportionate to the prices.. ie, prices have increased somewhat and track numbers reduced. Just a theory.

Thats sad for JB Hifi. With the internet around, CDs aren’t going to be around for much. Certain artists are trying to sell their songs, via usb format. (e.g containing entire album, special videos, extra features).
