DARREN HAYES : Pop!ular
It’s fair enough to say that no-one does pop quite like Darren Hayes. From his humble beginnings in Savage Garden to his debut solo effort ‘Spin’ to album No.3 ‘This Delicate Thing We’ve Made’, his ‘We Are Smug’ project and beyond, he’s always been one step ahead of the game. Darren knows good pop when he hears it – and ‘Pop!ular’, the first single to be lifted from his second album ‘The Tension And The Spark’, was most definitely good pop. Funky beats, a promise of sex to get what he wants, and a video that features Darren spruiking his wares to an unsuspecting London public, accompanied by two scantily clad dancers. From the flash mob-esque dance routine in the train station to dancing in the window of Kookai, the clip is pure class. Roll on 2010 for the next installment in Daz’s amazing career.

Funny; I never really appreciated this song when the single was out doin’ the rounds. But inbetween ‘The Tension And The Spark’ and ‘This Delicate Thing We Made’ I acknowledged that I was indeed a fan of Mr Hayes and bought his solo work. I L-O-V-E ‘The Tension’ album; it’s so powerful, pop, intellectual and honest. And then ‘Delicate’ well, we expected a great album, but whoa. . . who would’ve expected the masterpiece he delivered. Beee-rilliant!!
