GIRLS ALOUD : Sound Of The Underground
It’s hard to believe that it was seven years ago that five young women who came together as part of a UK reality TV show (Popstars : The Rivals) first burst onto the music scene with their single ‘Sound Of The Underground’. It was to become the first of four UK No.1 hits for the girls and heralded the beginning of what has become arguably one of the most successful girl groups in the world today. The song that started it all off was critically acclaimed with many reviewers thankful that the band’s debut single didn’t descend into the usual concoction of by-the-numbers schlock. The clip had the girls performing inside a cage along with their band – hardly groundbreaking stuff – but it heralded the beginning of a band that we reckon is more than a little bit special.

I don’t understnad why they weren’t pushed more over here. If they had come over to promote, I have no doubt that they could add ‘international success’ to their CV

Cheryl was one of those ‘nothing’ bandmates for me then. Who knew, she’d come out from the backbench looking like the million dollar bill that she is today.
