So earlier today we caught Jamie Cullum trying to jazz-up Rihanna. Now we’ve got classical songstress Katherine Jenkins covering Evanescence on her latest album ‘Believe’. And again, the ‘reworking’ doesn’t quite work. Sure, Katherine looks amazing, smoking up the scene on location in Istanbul looking every bit the mod, but the track itself is just Evanescence-lite. (For the real thing, check out the ORIGINAL CLIP.) But to make matters worse, they’ve decided to let remix team Almighty (who we love) in on the act to create something stomping for the discos. Avoid!

I admit I wasn’t incredibly keen on hearing a popera version of this song, given I’m a major Evanescence fan. I first heard her version when she performed it live and it was far too classical and operatic which for me completely killed the song. This studio version is better since Katherine has a bit more of the ‘pop voice’ going on, and it doesn’t really get operatic til the end.
As far as the Almighty mix is concerned, it’s actually quite decent for what it is. I was expecting hi-NRG cheese, and that’s exactly what it wasn’t. I was actually quite impressed with the handling on the vocal. Vibrato does not speed up well so the Almighty team did a good job splicing the sped-up vocal track with the regular vocal track to keep it all sounding natural. It’s probably a bit to Almighty’s advantage that they’d already previously released a cover remix of this song with the singer Rochelle from their own catalogue of artists.
