London trio The XX have been awarded the 2010 Mercury Prize in the UK for their album ‘xx’. The award was handed out in a ceremony in the British capital last night, and the band beat out stiff competition from the likes of Biffy Clyro, Corinne Bailey-Rae, Dizzee Rascal and Paul Weller to nab the prize.
“The xx have a unique sense of time and space – urban and enigmatic. The result is a wonderfully atmospheric album – sparse, urgent, hypnotic and powerful,” said Chairman of the judges Simon Frith after the award.
The album in question ‘xx’ was released in Australia earlier this year and managed a No.40 debut on the ARIA albums chart.
