We tried unsuccessfully in a dizzying haze of imaginary martinis last night to recall if there was any truth in Universal Music’s claims yesterday that R&B star Taio Cruz was the first male British solo artist to top the Australian singles chart since George Michael (‘Fastlove’) back in 1996.
It was this claim that we popped into our news ‘mini’ wrap that went live earlier today.
Sadly, through the falsified alcoholic fogginess, we couldn’t.
But then came an eagle-eyed anonymous spotter who this morning confirmed with us via a comment on the wrap that Elton John had hit the Aussie No.1 singles spot with ‘Something About The Way You Look Tonight’/’Candle In The Wind 1997’ following the death of Diana, Princess Of Wales in August 1997.
Universal has today re-issued the press release, but with a few little changes. This time they’ve told us that the last British solo male was actually Bob The Builder in 2001 with his smash ‘Can We Fix It?’. Prior to that it was indeed Elton John’s ‘Something About The Way You Look Tonight’ and prior to that, George’s ‘Fastlove’.
Everyone makes mistakes… And heck, it’s just got them some more column inches about Taio’s massive Aussie No.1 single ‘Dynamite’, which is now less than 25,000 copies shy of a double platinum status down under.

haha, its me your “eagle eyed anonymous spotter”, and yeah I suppose technically Universal are right about Bob! So maybe I’ll just say that Elton was the last non-fictional UK male solo artist to reach no.1 on the ARIA singles chart. :)
