PAULA ABDUL : Opposites Attract
After trying (and dismally failing) to recall the MC Skat Kat rap to this with a friend the other day, we thought the timing couldn’t be more right to feature Paul Abdul’s massive No.1 hit from 1989 – ‘Opposites Attract’. And spookily enough – it was released 21 years ago today.
Credit where it’s due, it’s not every day that the sixth single from an album also becomes that album’s biggest hit, but that’s precisely what ‘Opposites Attract’ was. A mammoth global hit – No.1 in Australia, No.1 in the US, No.1 in Canada, top five in a selection of other countries.
The clip too is a classic – with Paula, sporting a very 90s short dress, performing the song and a selection of dance routines with a cartoon character – no mean feat when she had to perform to thin air while the animators sketched Skat Kat and friends in afterwards. It’s the staircase and rooftop scenes, however, that are most iconic – and after all these years, the song still sounds rather fresh. A shame we don’t hear tracks like this on the radio anymore.
