We’ve just had word through from our peeps in radio land that ‘Hold It Against Me’ – the brand new single from Britney Spears – will be rush-released to Australian radio stations from 4pm tomorrow. It’s anticipated that Sony will also rush the single to digital retail around the same time.

BORING.

It’s because in the U.S., Tuesday is the standard release date of the week, where as in Australia it’s Friday. Some people in Australia would be so desperate, they wouldn’t want to wait that long so that is why they will release it simultaneously, to prevent the illegal downloads. For something as big as this, that’s what they have to do.

Sony did the same thing with ‘3’. It debuted at #50 but shot to #7 the following week, and either way a sale is a sale. I can’t wait to hear/buy it tomorrow!

I actually don’t see it as too bad an idea. The song will probably hit the top of itunes the minute it hits and will probably still manage a top 10 debut on the weekend

Hey Anonymous,
You’re probably right re: rush-releasing, though they’ll want to limit the damage from illegal downloads as much as possible.
If it’s not out on iTunes tomorrow evening, it’ll most certainly be by the end of the week. We can’t imagine them wanting to leave it any longer than that.

Sony would be crazy to rush the single to retail five days into the chart cycle. They’d be better off waiting until midnight on Thursday night (Friday morning) so that they can increase her chances of debuting highly. Silly Sony! :-)
