Lady Gaga doesn’t do subtle. With her spectacular headline-grabbing outfits and outspoken nature, we all know that. And her new single ‘Born This Way’, released to radio a short time ago and released to retail shortly, slaps you upside the head with as much subtlety as a yak in a leotard. An anthem for the disempowered, sure. But the debate is already on. Is it a poor man’s ‘Express Yourself’? And what of those lyrics, “don’t be a drag, just be a queen”? Or its hi-energy bassline?
We’ll reserve judgement ’til we’ve heard it a few more times, but for the moment… meh.
You?

This Mashup answers it… Gaga needs to come up with her own ideas:

What we all need to take into account is that a HUGE amount of hype surrounded this song (whether or not Gaga bought this on herself is irrelevant)Look past the hype, the fact it’s Lady Gaga and you have a pretty damn good pop sing that should rightfully hit #1 the world over.

Lady G is trying to jump in to be bigger than anyone before her… it doesnt happen like that. Success on that scale evolves. It happens… if she keep saying what she is saying she will fall harder and faster than her rise to this point.

this song sucks testicles. what a prehistoric let down.

“Meh.” +1

Of course it will sell, the hype machine will propel it to #1 no matter how crap it is. I haven’t heard it myself and don’t intend to listen to it if I have a choice in the matter.

Loving it!!! Finally something decent after Britney’s latest disappointment.
Yes there is perhaps a slight nod to Express Yourself but who cares!!! Great pop song!! Great beat and uplifting lyrics.
A quick look at USA, AUS and UK iTunes shows this track is No 1 in all territories!
Hope this trend of releasing straight to iTunes continues. Perhaps Kylie’s camp will take note. This is the age of instant gratification – or illegal download!!!!

I get the Madonna ‘Express Yourself’ comparison, but you know what? I don’t think that’s such a bad thing. The more listens I give ‘Born This Way’, the more I like it.
JimJim says
I get the comparisons, but I think it’s fairly good song in it’s own right (despite the lyrics).
Let me just remind people that ‘California Gurls’ was no less of a hit because it sounded like ‘TiK ToK’, same with a whole bunch of other songs.

@Robbie – there’s no way in the world that this is going to surpass Poker Face or Bad Romance in terms of broad appeal.
Robbie says
to Jackson. Born This Way has already reached #1 on itunes in 21 countries. This song will pass Pokerface & Bad Romance. LOVE IT!!!

I like it but don’t love it. It will make sense in context of the album I’d imagine. This wont be the biggest hit off the album but more an introduction to the theme of the record I feel…

2011 – Britney FTW. Britney is moving forward.
This new GaGa song is far from terrible, but its far from amazing.
It doesnt compare to her last 2 albums. But im sure if this single flops, her new album which has 17+ tracks – some of which will sure be like her old stuff, just as a safeguard, will get released

Once again Gaga leaves us feeling like we’ve heard this before and we have the verses are sung like she is trying to recreate When Love Takes Over, But then again maybe thats her originality rippin off other songs

The comparisons to Madonna’s (far superior!) Express Yourself are warranted. The chorus is extremely similar to the “so if you want it right now, better make him show you how” section of Express Yourself, and the other parts where she sings, “baby I was born this way” sound like the “lift you to your higher ground” parts in Express Yourself. Interesting. It might sound like 80s Madonna, but it’s nowhere near as good and Lady Gaga has done (much) better work. The similarities have made the national news in Australia…!
It will go to #1 for sure, due to curiosity and a rabid fan base, but it probably won’t stay there for long. It’s just plain wrong that this will be a #1 but Bad Romance wasn’t…!
In the latest issue of US Vogue, she says that she thinks she has the greatest voice in the industry at the moment and is one of the best songwriters. The girl has an ego and it’s huge (which is getting annoying). She’ll be livid about the Madonna rip off comments….
Jackson says
This song screams promo or club single, but if she thinks it’ll reach Bad Romance or Pokerface status than she’s sorely mistaken.
I now worship in the House Of $ thanks to Gaga. $ may be trashy but at least she isn’t pretentious.

LOVE IT! – I can hear some of the familiar moments, but I adore it!

1st listen = meh
2nd listen = Awesome song, Loving it.

Even though it screams Express Yourself, it’s a great pop song, the best of the year so far (not we’ve had many though). Looking forward to the album.

Bring the 90’s back!!!!
kirk.corner says
It’s a classic. Loved it from the first time I heard it. And I don’t think the “Express Yourself” comparisons are warranted. It’s about time we had a song featuring gay themes as a hit.
Zen says
Maybe if it was produced by RedOne . Then it would have been massive. I dont know ,its great song in a lyrical sense but lacks the beats that made her unique and strong like Bad Romance and PokerFace. Lets pray this gets into number one and the next single i would be more of the dancey-type.
Nevertheless i still love Gaga.

it’s DEEPER AND DEEPER XPRESS YOURSELF & VOGUE MADONNA COPYING AGAIN
Anonymous says
It doesn’t live up to the months of extreme hype.. It’s a rip-off of Madonna’s “Express Yourself” and a slight copy of “When Love Takes Over”.. Hopefully it’ll grow on me though :)

Hate it. And i wanted to love it
Brad says
Fernando Garibay produced this one. No wonder it sounds bad. He did ‘Dance in the Dark’ too, and that was one of Gaga’s worst songs in my opinion. I really want to like it, but I just can’t. It’s just a mess.
Anonymous says
It will do well.. its Gaga… but its Madonna in that track… the music may be ok. Not the song… it may grow.
Joseph says
Yeah, it’s nothing special. All this hype for NOTHING.
2011 is the year of Britney. Sorry GaGa
