After we revealed the new Damien Leith album via our New Release Schedule last week, we had a few people comment that perhaps they thought the project (entitled ‘Roy’) would be a tribute album to the late, great Roy Orbison.
Well they hit the nail on the head, with Sony Music this morning confirming that ‘Roy’ is indeed a Roy Orbison covers project, to be released in the lead-up to Mothers Day and to co-incide with what would have been the Big O’s 75th birthday.
Barbara Orbison, Roy’s widow, has even come on board for the project in executive producer capacity and tracks featured on the new LP include ‘Only The Lonely’, ‘Pretty Woman’, ‘Dream Baby’ and the evergreen ‘Crying’.
“Roy Orbison, his soulful voice and dignified artistry, has touched millions of people across all generations becoming the soul of rock n roll,” said Damien in a statement. “Today, I am very proud to pay tribute to a man who’s work has had a direct and lasting influence on both my songwriting and my singing.”
‘Roy’ will be released on Friday April 15.

Exciting and intriguing… The guy’s certainly got a sensational voice for a Roy project. I wonder if the full listing is just the famous stuff? Hopefully also some hidden gems too that Leith can really play with.

Hey Meg,
Yes, we’d heard the same thing, but not for a long time – perhaps 12 or more months ago.

Thanks Auspop,
I’ve heard rumours that Anthony Callea and Sony have parted company.
Do you know anything about that?

I can’t wait for this album from Damien, his voice is so suited to Roy’s music and to have the backing of Barbara Orbison is something really special.

Hey Meg,
We can guarantee that Damien is still signed with Sony Music Australia.
They’re the company releasing this new album.

According to Wikipedia he’s not listed as a Sony Australia artist(not the best source, I know). I think he’s with Sony Ireland though.
I can’t see the point of a covers album if it’s supposed to be an anniversary celebration. Why not just release a new ‘best of’ by the original artist?

I think it reeks of desperation because Sony can’t sell him as an original artist anymore. Love Roy Orbison songs but would rather listen to the originals than some ex idol ruining them.

Fantastic news. Damnien is brilliant singing In Dreams, Crying and Pretty Woman. Those songs have been sung in concerts recently and have been truly amazing.
I can’t wait to get my copy.

Interesting, i thought (and hoped) he had been dropped.
