SAVAGE GARDEN : I Want You
Given this morning’s announcement regarding Darren Hayes’ signing to Mercury Records, we thought the timing couldn’t be better to look back to where it all began for the Aussie singer. Brisbane duo Savage Garden (Darren and his mate Daniel Jones) burst onto the scene almost fifteen years ago with their hit single ‘I Want You’.
Sure, at the time most thought that Roxette was back on the scene, but they quickly realised that this was something very different – something very special, polished and very international-sounding from the land down under.
The song quickly became a hit here in Australia and went on to achieve further success around the world, including a top five placing on the Billboard singles chart in the US. Of course by that time, there was a new, slicker video clip to accompany its release.
This is the original Australian version of the ‘I Want You’ video, complete with kaleidoscopic background, Darren seemingly sailing along a road and plenty of “chica-Cherry Cola”s.
Will says
can’t believe it’s nearly been 15 years! this was awesome classic pop, and proved that an aussie band need not be overseas to be successful around the world – their songs were always good enough to stand on their own. thanks auspop for posting!
