News through this morning is that Lady Gaga’s new album ‘Born This Way’ cracked the magical million mark in its first week on sale in the United States. No doubt some of this would have come down to the fact that Amazon.com was offering the LP up for just 99c as part of a new 20GB music cloud storage deal.
Officially the LP bagged a respectable 1,108,000 sales in the US, taking her global tally to well beyond the two million mark in just one week.
‘Born This Way’ is now this year’s fastest selling album globally.

According to Billboard, around 440 000 of those copies were from Amazon (at 99c a copy). It’s impossible to know how many of those copies would still have been sold if the album had cost a “normal” price, but it’s clear that Lady Gaga will not have made anywhere near as much money from her million+ sales as every single other artist who can lay claim to having sold a million copies or more of an album in its debut week.

It’s a great album…I think it has really solid songs. It is a growqer gets better every listen.

Nice sales figures, but I can’t see it holding off Adele from #1 for to long across the world. Adele has been #1 on iTunes all week and Rolling in the Deep is now at #2 with Someone Like You finally cracking the top 10.
That being said 2mil in one weeks is pretty damn good.

The 99 cent thing will always hold a cloud over this albums debut. I just think to every other artist past and present it’s a big slap in the face. I just really hope this doesn’t start a ball rolling where other artists do the same kind of thing. Artists that truly deserved sales records in the past etc could all be in jeopardy because of these 99 cent gimmicks.
