Australia has today woken to the news that British singer Amy Winehouse has died.
Police found the singer deceased in her North London flat yesterday afternoon British time.
Amy first burst onto the scene in 2003 with her debut album ‘Frank’. It was critically acclaimed, nominated for the Mercury Prize, saw the singer pick up numerous industry accolades and announced the arrival of a unique new light on the international music scene.
Its successor ‘Back To Black’ rocketed to international success, picking up Grammys, Brit Awards and Ivor Novellos, along with millions of sales and more industry praise. It produced a series of classic pop songs including the title track, ‘You Know I’m No Good’ and ‘Tears Dry On Their Own’.
First single ‘Rehab’ became an instant classic, charting across the world. Produced by Mark Ronson, the track told of the singer’s very public battle with alcoholism and drug abuse. Sadly, it would be these addictions that would ultimately contribute to her demise.
Amy had always battled publicly with her demons, and the world seemed to take a perverse interest in following her downward personal spiral. It was sad and at times hard to watch.
Her last live appearance was in Serbia midway through last month, where she took to the stage in Belgrade, appearing incoherent, slurred and not in a fit state to perform. The remainder of the tour was cancelled.
Though there was always hope that professional intervention may help save her from self-destruction, it seemed after the Serbian performance that all hope was lost. Sadly, with today’s news, any hope of saving the troubled star has been extinguished.
Amy Winehouse was just 27 years old.

Such a shame, t great talent gone to waste. Look beyond her personal demons, this young lady had a talent not found in much of todays current music chart. Heart, sould and lyrical content.
R.I.P Amy
