The rumours swirling around the music industry this past week or so regarding the possible demise of one of Australia’s longest running music shows have proven to be true.
Channel 10 has this afternoon confirmed that their weekend morning champion ‘Video Hits’ will come to an end early next month.
Premiering on the network on February 15, 1987, the show was a weekend institution, bringing music fans all their favourite clips each week.
There were the obligatory competitions and interviews with some of the planet’s biggest artists, all under the guidance of a selection of awesome hosts.
Ten’s Chief Programming Officer David Mott explained the reasons for the show’s demise in a statement;
“Video Hits’ contribution to the network and the music industry over the past 24 years has been outstanding,” he said. “Music and how people listen to it, watch it and enjoy it has changed dramatically in last few years and now is the perfect time for the institution that is Video Hits to sign off. The show will always hold a special place in TEN’s history.”
Current hosts Faustina (Fuzzy) Agolley and Dylan Lewis will present a retrospective of the past 24 years on the final show.
Video Hits will continue each Saturday and Sunday morning until the final show at 10am on Saturday August 06.

Just on a side note. How good is is that the top 2 songs on iTunes are non-party tracks. I never thought I’d see (in the near future anyway) songs top the charts that are actually heartfelt, quality ballads with not an auto-tune machine in sight. It’s great and refreshing considering all the other crap. (‘Party Rock Anthem’ I am looking at you!)

Meh. Its for the best. Have never cared for the presenters and always wished they’d revert to playing chart/new release clips with the odd classic thrown in here and there. Tried too hard to be hip with the kids. End of an era seeing that Rage is just awful and unwatchable on a Saturday morning – not everyone like indie music!!! Go back to playing the Top 50 and new release clips please.

I live in rural NSW so whilst this news is sad, we haven’t had video hits in years (which I used to religiously tune in to every week). We’ve had this ridiculous Hit List TV crap recently…

Yes Very Sad , the memories of the 90’s video hits will alway live with me , The current day VH is boring and noting like it use to be.
Video Hits made me love music during the 80s and 90s. While i am sad to see the show go , im not sad to see the current format die!

Whilst it’s a shame this TV icon is disappearing, I have to admit the style of the show hasn’t appealed to me since about 1990 – I’ve been one of the thousands of households that tune into RAGE!!! on a weekend morning, more music, less chat (and generally less hip-hop americanised music and more local acts). I know everything can’t be to everyone’s taste all the time, but rage hits the mark for me more often than VH did.
