For those who were still recuperating from a big Friday night, Australian music media lost a pioneer this morning when Channel 10’s iconic ‘Video Hits’ said goodbye.
In bringing the curtain down on an extraordinary 24 year run, the current hosts Fuzzy and Dylan took a look back at some of the more memorable moments from the shot’s history, including interviews and some of viewers’ favourite clips.
Strangely, the video clips featured on this morning’s final episode were overwhelmingly pop – with Aqua, Spice Girls, Mariah Carey, Robbie Williams, Hanson, Ricky Martin, All Saints, Rihanna, Lady Gaga, Natalie Imbruglia and more featuring, a contrast to the more widespread and increasingly alternative musical selections featured on the show over the past few years.
With the show’s demise today, it leaves only Rage on the ABC as the only regular clip-based music show on free to air TV.
What we’d love to see now, however, is for Channel 10 to perhaps (even on digital channel Eleven) air an official top 50 video countdown once a week. No hosts, no crap – just a straight out countdown with clips three abreast between the ads – and no cutting the friggin’ things off 30, 40, 50 seconds from the end like they used to consistently on VH.
What about you? Would you watch that?

It would be good to see a music video show that played both old mainstream music video clips (with some old past chart history), the videos just added to youtube during the week.
Also, what’s on the Aria charts at the moment and on overseas charts :)

i haven’t watched Video Hits in ages so i got use to not seeing it, because they stopped showing it here where i live instead each weekend they showed Hit List Tv instead of Video hits so at least i got to see something rather then nothing.

Rage stopped airing the Top 50 in 2007 as per an ABC directive. ARIA had just entered into a commercial agreement with Telstra to sponsor the ARIA charts and this contravened ABC policy, so they scrapped the countdown. The ARIA Chart Show on Nova was the result of the Telstra sponsorship, but then that all fell through and the radio countdown was discontinued. Absolutely no reason why the ABC can’t use the ARIA Chart now. It is sorely missed!

YES, Auspop! You should start some sort of Facebook/online campaign!!

I always come across those type of countdowns on Channel V, but maybe for free to air, they could introduce a new digital channel, which just airs music or music related programming. It doesn’t have to be 24 hours though. Maybe just 6 am to 10 pm or something? Because I don’t know if it would be in enough demand for 24 hours.

I’d watch that – just the Top 50 and NOTHING else, as I used to watch Rage religiously when the countdown was on.
Only problem is artists take more time to make clips these days as radio seems to have a bigger impact on the charts. Eg. Moves like jagger reached #1 on itunes & the video isn’t even out yet.

Hell yess they need a new chart show, you know wat, i rekon “So fresh” should come back as the top 50 chart show because that show was modern and very relevent aswell ie the compilation albums!!!!!!!!!!!

Id watch that! If they had popular music not 90’s music that never made the charts.

I think the top 50 show is a great idea, this is what I would do –
Top 50 but not every video, just the new entries, rises, songs with impact, mixed with new releases & tracks which didnt make the top 50!
Focus on Australian independant artists!
I reckon it needs a host or two – they can play some interviews with artists & bands & advise the viewers whats out this week as far as new music goes!
I reckon they should also do a Sunday show as well – for music specials.
Example – a lot of 80s acts are touring soon, so a special for them featuring their videos – uncut – Janet Jackson is here soon too, maybe inter-cut with interview snippets where the artist talks about that video.
They need to think outside the box & incorporate things like Twitter, Facebook, Google +, YouTube etc!
Maybe I should produce the show :)))

Yep, I would definitely watch that, no need for all the crap in between.

Yes I would love a top 50 like Rage used to do!! But I heard that Rage stopped it due to copyright problems??

When I was younger I was addicted to the RAGE Top 50 countdown. Was quite upset when they discontinued it.
Young music lovers need to have a variety of music sources (Free to air), and Eleven would be a perfect location for a clips based show – like the original Video Hits, or as you say, the ARIA Top 50 countdown.
I’d definitely put it on.

Yes i’d watch that. They should do the OZ top 50 (well, top 50 charting singles that have a music video).

I completely agree with you auspOp – Aus free-to-air TV is missing a top 50 video show, and it can even be argued that the public broadcaster (ABC) should provide this now that the offering is missing from commercial channels altogether. Reinstate it through Rage!

For the past 19 years, I have said that! No ads, no cutting off etc.
It’s an excellent idea.
I use to love when RAGE would do the countdown and then play new videos after. What happened to that?

I think another music based show will be coming to free-to-air sooner than you think ;)
