“My name is Luka. I live on the second floor…” sings Aussie country singer Kasey Chambers in the opening bars of what is the first single from her forthcoming covers set called ‘Storybook’.
Yes, it’s a reworking of the Suzanne Vega track that peaked just outside the top 20 here in Australia back in 1987 and it forms part of the collection of tracks that will be released next month, all of which have some connection with Ms Chambers’ career.
“I’ll be totally honest,” she says in a statement promoting the new album, “Without the inspiration of a lot of the artists on ‘Storybook’, I probably wouldn’t be making music today.
“I remember when ‘Luka’ was on the radio, I heard it and fell in love with it, but wasn’t sure why. It’s a soft sounding, beautiful song with such a hard-hitting theme. To bring those vastly different elements together in a song is something that’s always amazed me about ‘Luka’,” she said.
‘Songbook’ will also contain covers from the catalogues of Paul Kelly, Patty Griffin, Steve Earle and Lucinda Williams among others.
It’s set to be given a release on Friday September 23.
