We don’t quite know what it is about Susan Boyle, but every now and again, she throws up a little curve ball that just begs you to sit up and take note. On her debut album ‘I Dreamed A Dream’, it was her cover of the 1971 Rolling Stones classic ‘Wild Horses’ that had us transfixed. It was her soft and well crafted delivery of the song that made it stand out above the rest.
And from what we’ve heard of her new album ‘Someone To Watch Over Me’ thus far, it’s her rendition of Depeche Mode’s 1990 single ‘Enjoy The Silence’ that impresses here.
Once again, meticulously delivered with a soft and subtle vocal, the song is transformed from a straight out pop number to a sweeping ballad. Is it wrong to say we’re liking this?

Why would it be wrong to say you like it? Would you ask that question if Susan Boyle was 20 and stick thin? I think not.
In my opinion, asking that question doesn’t make you look very good. Listen to the lyrics and think about what they say and then think about why that song has a lot of meaning to her.
When Martin Gore wrote Enjoy The Silence, his intent was that it be sung as a ballad. I love DM’s version and now I have a second one to enjoy.

Good description, “meticulously delivered…” Emotional complexity is her forte, very lyrical, wonderful control, beautiful. Wild Horses has exceptional artistry, but she’s has more freedom with this one.

Why do so many Depeche Mode fans like yourself ask, ‘is it wrong to like this?’, or they ask, ‘what do you think of it’ rather than giving their own opinion.
It IS Susan Boyle and it IS GREAT! And it is okay to like it and her.

As the old song goes, if it’s wrong, then I don’t want to be right!! I think Susan’s rendition of this rock classic is stunning. She has a way of taking a song and making it uniquely hers and she has done it again. Absolutely brilliant. This album is going to be spectacular!!!

It is never wrong to set aside pre-conceptions and really LISTEN to a beautifully sung re-interpretation of an iconic song. SUBO gets better every year. I imagine Martin Gore is very pleased with what she did with his song.
