First things first… ‘The One That Got Away’ is not the strongest single nor is it our favourite track on the ‘Teenage Dream’ album – that honour probably goes to ‘Firework’ – and we reckon you can tell that the LP is starting to get towards the end of its shelf-life as far as singles releases is concerned.
That said, Katy always seems to give good video – and this one is no exception. She’s seemingly happily married in a decade to come, but a wistful recollection of a more carefree, artistic previous love has her in all sorts of emotional distress.
The ‘flashback’ scenes reveal that a) Katy looks amazing with black hair and b) she’s totally lucky in love, posing for paintings, laughing, getting tattooed. The flash-forward scenes tell tales of lost love and major regrets.
If nothing else, the clip to ‘The One That Got Away’ should serve as an important lesson to always keep your eye on the road ahead. Kinda ironic when old Katy spends so much time looking back.
