So so torn. Emeli Sande’s ‘Heaven’ was insanely glorious – and as we’ve mentioned previously, it was in and out of our top spot on several occasions across the past few weeks. It is utterly superb and will forever be among our favourites. But then so too will this incredible single. And we guess what tipped this one over the edge and into the No.01 position for us was the fact that not only is the track truly extraordinary, but the artist who created it is a superstar – and a homegrown one at that.
Dropped just a few months back and performed sublimely on Australia’s version of ‘The X Factor’, Darren Hayes’ ‘Bloodstained Heart’ took our breath away – and still does. A song about standing by someone, no matter the personal cost, the tale of eternal and uncompromising love is narrated with care, honesty and class by Mister Hayes, his faultless vocal and bewildering falsetto.
It’s crafted beautifully, vocally building from the care, softness and vulnerability of the first verse to the sincerity, intent and power of the final chorus, which in turn is further enhanced by the epic production of Mister Falk, who guides the song into modern day classic territory. ‘Bloodstained Heart’ is an unequivocal stunner.
So ladies and gents, pop gods and goddesses, presenting our No.01 Pop Single Of 2011… Darren Hayes’ ‘Bloodstained Heart’. Proof, we suppose, that auspOp is where the good guys always win…

Fantastic choice. It’s my favourite single of the year too!!! Yay for perfect pop songcraft!
There should be more beautifully written, homegrown songs on the radio instead of the imported drivel that’s been saturating our speakers.

Now it’s time for ARIA to take notice for next year’s awards.
Probably won’t happen though…
