There are very few songs that hit the charts throughout the course of 2011 that are so instantly recognisable, so breathtakingly beautiful as Adele’s ‘Someone Like You’. While a good slice of Adele’s chart contemporaries were banging on aimlessly about being in the club, dancing in the club, getting down in the club or owning the club, Adele, without fanfare, won our hearts with her simple, heartfelt songs, the most stunning of which is undoubtedly ‘Someone Like You’. Though yes, the single was in very real danger of suffering over-exposure via any and every TV talent competition globally, Adele’s original version was unassailable – and strangely, people actually bought it – and the album it came from; ’21’.
A heart-wrenchingly pained track about a love lost, a bittersweet goodbye and being trapped in that void between turning your back to face the future and not being able to move on.
Yes, it was everywhere, but in the case of this track, that’s no bad thing.
Our No.04 Single Of The Year for 2011 is Adele’s ‘Someone Like You’.
