Right-o, so the team at Sony Music sent us a little burn of a four track promo from Gypsy & The Cat about a year and a half ago and we were immediately taken by how timeless and classic the songs sounded.
‘Jona Vark’ is no exception. Following in the footsteps of the game-changing, jaw-dropping amazingness of Empire Of The Sun a few years ago, Xavier and Lionel set about setting their own course towards musical superstardom and after popping out their debut album ‘Gilgamesh’ late last year, back in March they furnished us with this – the third single ‘Jona Vark’.
Sonically, it harked back to Fleetwood Mac’s ’80s classic ‘Seven Wonders’; layerings of lush vocals, clever chord combinations and lyrics dealing with personal freedom and enlightenment, creating a sublime, slick and polished single that goes down in our books as one of the year’s best. It’s seriously classy pop.
And anyone who saw the boys captivate live arena audiences this year during their support slot on Kylie’s ‘Aphrodite’ tour would have known in their throbbing, pulsing hearts that Xavier and Lionel have one big, bright future ahead.
Ladies and gents, it’s No.08 on our Pop Single Of The Year for 2011 countdown, Gypsy & The Cat’s ‘Jona Vark’.
