With her latest single ‘The One That Got Away’ peaking just inside the top 30 on the ARIA charts last weekend (already achieving a gold sales accreditation down under), US pop diva Katy Perry has roped in the services of American rapper B.o.B. to help improve the single’s chart chances both here and overseas.
Not that she’s going to need it; The single continues to improve on the US Billboard chart, where it’s raced up a further five spaces this week to reside in the No.4 position. No doubt her label EMI will be hoping to get the track to No.1 to beat Michael Jackson’s record of five No.1 singles from the same album.
‘The One That Got Away’ (featuring B.o.B.) was serviced to Australian media just a few minutes ago.

It’s worthy of note that something like “California Gurls” or “Teenage Dream” individually sold more than ALL five #1 singles combined from “Bad”. While it’s a very different market today, it can be argued that Katy has had to move a lot more product than Michael did to achieve her five #1 singles to date, and the market is much, much more competitive than it was back then. Good luck to her! Let’s not forget that it was MJ’s record company that first figured out how to maximise the chances of a #1 debut in the US by releasing the single on the first day of the chart cycle (rather than partway through it, as had always been the case previously). It’s no accident that an MJ single was the first ever to debut at #1 in the US. Sony planned it that way and Michael would have been in on it, too. Kudos to them.

As much as I love Katy and the singles from Teenage Dream, she definitely doesn’t deserve it as E.T’s Kanye remix wasn’t available on the TD album, and now they’re doing another remix and it’s discounted to 69 cents on US iTunes.

Anonymous – MJ doesn’t hold the record with the singles from “Thriller” (he “only” had three #1 singles from that album) – it was the much weaker “Bad” that scored him 5 #1 hits from the same album.

She has done well but she does not deserve to beat Michael’s and her record. Amazing the lengths her label is prepared to go for this number 1. Just like getting in Missy Elliott in an obvious attempt to get Last Friday Night over the line.
Strong singles but not just not in the same league as Thriller was. Shame if she makes it…

Seriously? I loved that for once there was no cheap phoned-in rap to get the song to #1. Now I have to take it back :

Jeez. Does anyone know if Michael Jackson had to do any tricks to have 5 No.1 singles on an album?
