We love ourselves a little bit of Natalia Kills here at auspOp. We imported her album ‘Perfectionist’ from the UK early last year and it was so strong that it would have easily found itself placed within our top five albums of the year.
Strangely, however, Australia seems to have been blissfully ignorant of her charms (save perhaps for her appearance on the LMFAO single ‘Champagne Showers’), which is a crying shame, ’cause there’s nothing stopping her from being a bonafide global superstar.
Single No.4 from the album is the angsty ‘Kill My Boyfriend’ – a track about a young lady who’s clearly unhappy in love – so much so that she’d consider committing a heinous crime just to get out of the relationship.
She’s a little kooky, she’s a little crazy. But she’s a whole lot of spunk and we love her.

Australia is only a small market, so I guess promotion isn’t really a priority for record labels locally. Basically, the reason why is that radio won’t support it. If it ain’t Rihanna, Katy, Adele or the atrociously overplayed ‘Moves Like Jagger’, radio won’t take much of a chance. They play it safe, because they know that people are certain to like it. More listeners = more advertising = more money. Commercial radio does not care about music at all. If they did, they would do research and gather together popular songs making it internationally, instead of waiting to pick and choose from what the record label offers them. The only station which shows some initiative is the EDGE 96.1 in Sydney. They often seem to be on top of things and don’t even care whether the other stations are playing something or not.
The whole thing really used to get to me, but thanks to the internet, it is very easy to follow the UK and US where the music on the charts and radio is much more interesting consisting of a much wider variety. It’s much more interesting than the same 4 songs that are in the top 10 for weeks and weeks on the ARIA Chart.
Another point is, Natalia really hasn’t taken off that much to be honest. She’s had some success in Europe, but nothing notable elsewhere. I think she’s great, but she is too left-field for the general listener. She is an alternative kind of pop star. So is Gaga nowadays, but she started out with ‘Just Dance’ and ‘Poker Face’ which were obviously appealing to the mainstream. Now that she’s very highly established, she has more creative freedom. Natalia should of started out with something a little bit more generic. ‘Perfectionist’ sounds like her third album, not her debut.

Where is Australia with Natalia Kills? Seriously. Who is her record label? Are they pushing her? She is really amazing. Everyone I show her music to really love her so she has an appeal to people, it’s just like she is a wasted chance for another bona fide star here in Australia. Lady GaGa was first to break here in Australia than anywhere else in the world, we took a chance and look at her now. I believe Natalia Kills could be the same. ‘Mirrors’, ‘Wonderland’, ‘Free’ and ‘Kill My Boyfriend’ are among my 4 favourite tracks of the last 2 and a half years. And her album is my second favourite of all time…better than GaGa’s album efforts. This whole thing really disappoints me…
