We all know Simon Cowell-produced TV talent shows like ‘The X Factor’ predominantly consistently churn out milky-white, clean-living, polished-to-perfection pop puppets who are boxed into a genre and pre-packaged to appeal to a certain demographic.
But Aiden Grimshaw’s debut single is something altogether out of the box. It’s banging drum ‘n’ bass beats, it’s falsetto vocals, it’s angst-ridden lyrics and it’s all wrapped up in frenetic little three and a half minute package. The corresponding video (below) is dark, moody and street-wise – most certainly not the kind of thing you’ve come to expect from an Idol/X Factor/Got Talent contestant.
After appearing as a finalist on ‘The X Factor’ back in 2010, Aiden moved to London and set to work on his debut album.
“I’d been given this opportunity and I didn’t want to waste it,” he said of his ‘journey’. “But I had no idea what sort of music was really me. Everyone else had their own ideas, but all I knew was what I didn’t want.”
What he didn’t want was predictable schmaltz, obviously, because we reckon ‘Is This Love’ is one of the most exciting pieces of forward-thinking pop to come out of a TV talent show in too long. It’s out in Britain on June 03. Let’s hope Sony Australia gets on board soon.
