As predicted last week, Carly Rae Jepsen has finally lost her hold on the ARIA singles chart No.1, while it’s continuing good news for five young lads from the UK. There’s plenty of ‘The Voice’ chart action and some rather big drops too. Let’s check them out in this week’s Chart Watch.
SINGLES
We mentioned last week that if Flo Rida held onto the No.1 iTunes position with his new single ‘Whistle’, he’s stand a pretty good chance of knocking Carly Rae Jepsen from her No.1 perch – and that’s precisely what he’s done this week as he whistles all the way to the top, picking up a gold accreditation (35,000 copies) after just two weeks.
Maroon 5 and Wiz Khalifa also improve with ‘Payphone’ – up four positions to No.3, Florence & The Machine’s ‘Never Let Me Go’ is officially platinum, B.o.B. is into the top ten with his gold selling single ‘So Good’ and Reece Mastin’s dream of another No.1 looks like it’s over with his single ‘Shut Up & Kiss Me’ dropping from No.2 to No.10.
‘We Are Young’ by Fun. drops from the top ten but picks up a third platinum nod, Timomatic’s ‘If Looks Could Kill’ is certified platinum and Rihanna’s ‘Where Have You Been’ hits gold sales. Pitbull’s ‘Back In Time’ is seemingly in a hurry as it soars from No.26 to No.15.
‘The Voice’ contestant Lakyn Heperi’s version of Angus & Julia Stone’s ‘Big Jet Plane’ was the best of the show’s bunch this week, premiering in the No.18 spot – also the highest debut for the week. James Morrison’s sublime ‘I Won’t Let You Go’ becomes his first top 20 Australian hit since his debut single ‘You Give Me Something’ six years ago (up to No.19 and gold), but One Direction’s ‘One Thing’ and ‘What Makes You Beautiful’ are heading in the opposite direction, down to Nos.21 and 25 respectively.
New at No.26 is Usher’s uptempo new track ‘Scream’, Angus & Julia’s ‘Big Jet Plane’ benefits from ‘The Voice’ spot, re-entering at No.27 and almost matching its No.21 peak and Lil Wayne’s ‘Mirror’ surges 15 places to No.30.
Also surging this week is Ricki-Lee’s ‘Do It Like That’ – up to a new peak of No.31, while Fatai Veamatahau’s version of Eminem & Rihanna’s ‘Love The Way You Lie’ debuts in the No.21 spot and Gotye & Kimbra’s ‘Somebody That I Used To Know’ drops 16 to No.35.
Other debuts include B.o.B. ftg. Taylor Swift with ‘Both Of Us’ (No.46) and Rachael Leahcar’s version of the classic ‘Over The Rainbow’ (No.47).
Outside the top 50, David Guetta’s track with Chris Brown and Lil Wayne (‘I Can Only Imagine’) gets a big boost, re-entering at No.52, Jennifer Lopez’ latest single with Pitbull (‘Dance Again’) debuts at No.53 and Eminem & Rihanna’s ‘Love The Way You Lie’ re-enters at No.55 on the back of Fatai Veamatahau’s aforementioned version on ‘The Voice’.
Speaking of ‘The Voice’, Paramore’s ‘The Only Exception’ fares a little better than Ben Hazlewood’s version (No.60 and No.69 respectively), Seal’s ‘Kiss From A Rose’ drops from No.36 to No.61 and David Guetta & Usher’s ‘Without You’ (being used on Channel 9’s promos for ‘Tricky Business’) re-emerges at No.65.
Birds Of Tokyo’s ‘Plans’ re-enters at No.71, Karise Eden’s version of Amy Winehouse’s ‘Back To Black’ is in at No.72 and there are re-entries from Natasha Duarte (‘Wanted To Feel’ at No.75) and The Fray (‘Heartbeat’ at No.77).
One Direction’s track ‘More Than This’ debuts at No.78, Rebecca Ferguson’s ‘Nothing’s Real But Love’ drops 25 places to No.79 and New Empire’s ‘One Heart/Million Voices’, used in Channel 9’s Olympic Games promos, is in at No.81.
Conor Maynard’s ‘Can’t Say No’ debuts at No.84, Olly Murs’ Aussie promo tour does the business with his single ‘Heart Skips A Beat’ coming in at No.85 and the Glee Cast’s version of Whitney’s ‘How Will I Know’ premieres at No.92.
Emeli Sande’s ‘Next To Me’ drops 34 places (No.62 to No.96), Missy Higgins’ ‘Unashamed Desire’ drops from No.58 to out of the top 100, but the week’s biggest drop comes courtesy of Kate Miller-Heidke’s ‘The Last Day On Earth’. On easy street at No.34 last week, it’s now also gone from the top 100.
ALBUMS
One Direction holds firm on the ARIA albums chart again this week with ‘Up All Night’, with Adele, Jack White and Ed Sheeran following closely behind.
New at No.5 is Norah Jones’ latest album ‘Little Broken Hearts’ – the singer’s first Aussie top five album in five years, while Seal’s ‘Hits’ reaches a new peak of No.9.
Lionel Richie’s ‘Tuskegee’ is up ten places to No.14, Santigold’s ‘Master Of My Make Believe’ becomes her highest charting Aussie album, premiering at No.16 and Alston’s LP ‘Don’t Funk With Me’ re-enters the top 100 for its second week at a very respectable No.21.
New at No.23 is Jack Vidgen’s ‘Inspire’, Pennywise’s ‘All Or Nothing’ is in at No.27, Michael Crawford’s ‘The Story Of My Life’ surges to No.29 and B.o.B’s ‘Strange Clouds’ premieres at No.32.
The ‘Avengers Assemble’ at No.37, Angus & Julia Stone’s ‘Down The Way’ re-enters the top 50 at No.47 and Prince’s ‘The Hits/The B-Sides’ re-emerges at No.51 as the singer’s visit approaches.
Also surging this week is Amy WInehouse’s ‘Back To Black’ (No.88 to No.52), Troy Cassar-Daley’s ‘Home’ improves 24 places to No.54, but Children Collide’s album ‘Monument’ slumps from No.16 to No.59 in its second week on sale.
New at No.63 is Celtic Woman’s ‘Believe’, Jason Mraz’ ‘Love Is A Four Letter Word’ is down from No.33 to No.68, Air Supply’s ‘The Ultimate Collection’ debuts at No.77 and Rufus Wainwright’s latest looks well and truly ‘Out Of The Game’, down 41 places to No.79 in week No.2.
Madge’s ‘MDNA’ is down to No.85, Tiesto’s ‘Club Life Vol.2’ is in at No.86 and the ‘Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries’ soundtrack debuts at No.87.

Hey Anonymous (and anonymous #3),
There’s always a possibility of the releases getting extra platinum nods – it all depends on when and how many copies they’re selling each week. Usually in the middle of the year album sales slide dramatically (excepting big name releases), so ‘UAN’ could be selling as little as 3000 copies a week for its No.1 placing.
