Well it’s now May and that can only mean one thing – the Eurovision Song Contest isn’t far away. It’s now just weeks before entrants from across Europe descend on the Azerbaijani capital Baku to take part in the first of the semi finals in this year’s competition. Each semi final consists of 18 performances, with just ten performers from each making it through to the 2012 Grand Final on Saturday May 26, where the ‘big five’ of the UK, Germany, France, Spain and Italy, along with the host nation Azerbaijan, will be waiting for them. Here at auspOp, we’re continuing our daily look at each of the competitors’ songs in the lead-up to Eurovision 2012.
ROMAN LOB : Standing Still
As one of the “big five” countries, Germany never has to go through the whole rigmarole of having their song voted on in Eurovision. Instead, they’re straight through to the Grand Final, where they meet the UK, France, Italy, Spain and the host nation. This year, they’re introducing 21 year old Roman Lob to the world.
Roman attempted to qualify for Eurovision four years ago as part of a boyband entitled ‘G12P’ (which stood for ‘Germany 12 Points’). And though he didn’t make it through then, it seems he never gave up on his Eurovision dream, winning national selections as part of Germany’s ‘Unser Star für Baku’.
There are some big names behind the single too. It’s a co-write by British singer Jamie Cullum, along with pop songwriters Wayne Hector and Steve Robson.
We’re loving the chord arrangements in this – and it’s incredibly international in its sound, virtually guaranteeing that Germany should be towards the top of the final count on Saturday May 26.
