In a star-studded ceremony at Sydney’s iconic Ivy Hotel today, the team from ARIA handed out a range of awards, celebrating our most beloved musicians and their incredible chart and sales achievements.
Originally included as part of the annual ARIA Awards ceremony, the ‘Number Ones’ event paid tribute to our artists who have topped the ARIA singles, albums or DVD charts over the past two years.
In attendance to collect their awards were Gotye, Missy Higgins, Reece Mastin, Karise Eden, Mirusia and Jonathon Douglass from Hillsong (picture below). Others to be honoured today included Guy Sebastian, Bliss N Eso, Drapht, Hilltop Hoods, Keith Urban, The Temper Trap and Powderfinger.
Also featured in this year’s event for the first time were the awards for ‘Highest Selling Single’ and ‘Highest Selling Album’, both previously incorporated into the annual ARIA Awards.
International superstar Gotye took out both, naturally, for ‘Somebody That I Used To Know’ (ten times platinum) and ‘Making Mirrors’ (three times platinum) respectively.
ARIA Chairman Denis Handlin was full of praise for the artists represented at today’s event.
“Today’s ARIA #1 Awards were a wonderful showcase of the musical talent we have in this county across a range of genres,” he said. “It highlights the affinity that Australian music fans feel towards a particular artist to propel them to the number one spot on the ARIA Charts.”
Also launched at today’s event was the new-look ARIA Charts website, which has been completely redesigned to include extra chart information, cover images, videos, music news, galleries and much more.
It went live early this week at www.ariacharts.com.au. A mobile app is forthcoming.
