The countdown is on ’til the 2012 MTV European Music Awards.
This year’s edition of the annual celebration is to be held in Dusseldorf, Germany on Sunday November 11 and a swag of top names are expected to be in attendance to both perform and present on the night.
Brilliantly, our own Gotye is up for the Best Song gong for his international smash ‘Somebody That I Used To Know’, but he’s up against some tough competition from the likes of Carly Rae Jepsen and Rihanna. He’s also in the running for the Best Australia/New Zealand act category (alongside 360, The Temper Trap, Gin Wigmore and Kimbra), from which one will emerge and enter the Worldwide Act category.
Rihanna tops this year’s nominations list with a respectable six nominations, followed closely behind by Taylor Swift (five noms), Justin Bieber and Katy Perry (each with four nominations).
The awards will be broadcast live on MTV Australia on Monday November 12 Australian time.

How are these nominees decided? No Doubt release one single in the eligibility period that scrapes into the Top 40 in one country, the Top 30 in another, and flops badly everywhere else, yet Madonna has a #1 album right across Europe and two Top 10 singles in multiple countries (plus an extremely successful tour), and she’s not nominated. How does that work?
