US pop songstress Martika has announced to her fans via an email this morning that her upcoming tour to both Australia and New Zealand has been cancelled.
The tour, the singer’s first ever to Australia, was originally due to kick off in Sydney a few days ago, but “scheduling conflicts” in late August brought about changes to the tour (including the cancellation of dates in both Fremantle and Adelaide).
Martika’s visit was then due to kick off in Canberra next Saturday night, with five more dates following across the east coast.
In the message to fans today, Martika said, “My feelings are hurt, I am so angry, I can’t stop crying because I wanted to perform for my Australian and New Zealand fans and now this is cancelled.
“My live show is ready and I AM READY, so those that were excited to see me perform in Australia will get to see this show, just at a later date.
“I am now going to go drown myself in a chocolate sundae. I can’t begin to tell you how sorry, upset and angry I am,” she said.
Though there’s no word from the team at Frontier Touring just yet, refunds will no doubt be made available in the days ahead.

I went to see Belinda Carlisle last year (not again this year, though – it had barely been a year, so I didn’t see the point, since it didn’t seem that she’d be doing anything different) and I saw Taylor Dayne last year, too. Belinda’s concert was packed, although Taylor had a tiny (dead!) crowd (in the same venue). Both were brilliant, although they both had a much larger range of material to draw on (Martika had just six Top 40 Australian hits, two of which would barely be remembered by anyone). They should have known before now, though, that ticket sales were poor.

A shame. ‘Martika’s Kitchen’ was such a good album and a big part of my world for a good couple of years.
Unfortunately her ‘comeback’ single was a big hot mess and was not going to win her any news fans, nor bring anyone back. I didn’t buy tickets. I would go to see ‘Love Ty Will Be Done’ etc but didn’t want to sit through a concert seeing the decline of one of my former idols which I expect it may have been if she played new tracks anything like her first single. Did she even release a second song? Maybe we won’t even see the album now. She should give Prince a call!

Hey Anonymous,
We’d assume poor ticket sales would be the reason, sadly.

That’s really weird. It sounds like the promoter has pulled the plug. Would poor ticket sales have been an issue? I was really looking forward to it… :-(
