The great thing about Nelly Furtado is that she’s not afraid to push the boundaries of what pop could be. But in a lot of respects, therein lies the problem, because commercial radio (in Australia in particular) is on the whole incredibly reactive when it comes to the latest music. They’re afraid to try something new in case it loses them listeners and in turn (worse still) advertisers.
When then leaves it up to the community and online sectors to champion tracks like this third single from Nelly Furtado’s new album ‘The Spirit Indestructible’. Though the clip looks like one big ad for Mini and you might need to send out a search party for any skerrick of a tune (except, perhaps, for the choruses), the beauty of ‘Parking Lot’ lies in Nelly giving the boundaries of pop a stylised little nudge to see if she can edge herself a little out of the square.
