Our eagle-eyed readers might have noticed that one of their favourite regulars was missing in action last week, but we’re here again this week to rectify all that and provide you with a raft of new tunes that might form part of your weekend playlist. Yes, Free Track Friday is back, with some fabulous freebies for you to have and love. So downloading finger at the ready, please…
• YOUNG DREAMS : Fog Of War
There’s probably a reason that we were sent notifications of this fab free download from a few different sources. ‘Fog Of War’ is the recently released new single from Norwegian outfit Young Dreams. It’s filled with sunshiney synthesisers, sweeping strings and joyous vocals… A superb slice of Nordic ethereal pop that’s been lifted from the band’s forthcoming debut long player, which their label Universal hints we’ll be experiencing early in the new year. Remixes are available digitally now, but you can bag the single version FREE right HERE. And you should.
• A SKILLZ & KRAFTY KUTS : 50 Years Of Bond Megamix
Bond. James Bond. 007. International Man Of Mystery. Gentlemen, we can rebuild him. No, wait… that’s the Six Million Dollar Man. Anyways, by now you’re aware that there’s a brand new Bond film in the offing. It’s called ‘Skyfall’ and it features the lead single of the same name, warbled by megastar new mum Adele. Well A.Skillz & Krafty Kuts and put their bonces together and have mixed up some of the best Bond film themes from throughout the past 50 years and added in some beats and blips. Marvellous. And they’re giving it away free HERE. Better!
• FUN MACHINE : Alchemist
We’d not heard anything of Canberra trio Fun Machine before their latest single ‘Alchemist’ arrived in our inbox recently. But the track’s super cute and blends stabs of indie-pop with some heavier rock influences, along with both male and female vocals. ‘Alchemist’, the band’s second single, is lifted from a forthcoming album which we’re told will see the light of day early in the new year. It’s entirely likeable and for a limited time, you can choose to either gift the band some money for it or download it completely free. The choice is yours and we won’t judge. Grab it HERE.
• GUERRE : Rashad (Loose Pace)
Oh this is just audial sex. We’ve always privately loved tunes that are a bit experimental in their sound, lush soundscapes, samples, beats and blips. Bent’s album ‘Programmed To Love’ is one of our favourite albums ever. But who needs the Brits when you’ve got something as smokin’ cool as this right here at home in Australia. Sydney outfit Guerre delivers something altogether stylish with his track ‘Rashad (Loose Pace)’. Describing his style as “Hybrid Urban Indigenous”, this track is one with which to open the windows on a warm summers night, let the breeze in, put up your feet and pour yourself a martini. We know what WE’RE doing tonight! Get it free HERE.
• BLIND MOON : Nothing Left To Lose
One listen to the latest single from Chicago outfit Blind Moon and it’s easy to understand why their publicists have used so many adjectives and genres to describe the band’s music. “Indie Rock,” they tell us. “Ambient Rock, Dream-Pop” and even “Shoegaze”, whatever that means. But what the single ‘Nothing Left To Lose’ is at its heart is entirely listenable dreamy indie-pop that lays atop a lush soundscape that will have you either listening intently or drifting off to slumberland. Either or, you can currently pick the single up on their Bandcamp page by either giving some $$$s or no pennies down. Download HERE.
• BETTER THAN THE WIZARDS : Let Me Down
If you like your tunes a little more soulful, then you might want to wrap your listening gear around these tunes from Melbourne outfit Better Than The Wizards. The six piece may claim on their Facebook page to fuse the styles of “pop, funk, rock, and jazz”, but their track ‘Let Me Down’, available for free download on the Triple J site (HERE) is a whole lotta blues-infused soul. Stripped right back, this is the kind of material you could imagine oozing from the pipes of soul superstar Renee Geyer. It’s a whole lotta class. Catch the band in residency next month at Melbourne’s Esplanade Hotel.
And that’s your lot for this week. We promise not to keep you hanging next week… Free Track Friday will return in just seven sleeps! Have yourself a BRILLIANT weekend!
