And so we come to our No.1 pop single of the year. And to be honest, we really had to think long and hard about this one. Sure, there have been some brilliant tunes that have popped up across the year 2012, but we can’t think of any for us that outshone this project – and in particular this song.
While ‘Good Morning To The Night’ got all the glory as the lead single and the dancier track (and was our favourite of the two singles earlier on), it was Elton John vs Pnau’s ‘Sad’ that wormed its way into our hearts, warmed them through and for us goes down as a modern-day classic.
The very collaboration of these two musically polar opposite artists was inspired, but when Messrs Littlemore and Mayes delved into Sir Elton’s ’70s back catalogue and worked samples of (in this case) five different songs into their smooth, almost timeless production, the heavens smiled.
The ‘Sad’ lyric sample is lifted from Elton’s classic single ‘Sorry Seems To Be The Hardest Word’, while the majority of the verses are lifted from song ‘Curtains’, from his 1975 album ‘Captain Fantastic And The Brown Dirt Cowboy’.
Inspired stuff with a decidedly Aussie flavour.
Don’t be ‘Sad’ – our No.1 pop single of the year for 2012 is Elton John vs Pnau’s ‘Sad’.

We’ll give you that, Arlen.
Shocking performance on ‘The X Factor’.

Wow, auspop! Really? This was also one of the worst x-factor performances of the year. It’s just so monotone and repetitive. Each to their own and all that though :/

What an odd choice

Unfortunately have to agree, a very disappointing #1. But we all have varying tastes.
Overall, the list was at time a little disappointing, maybe because I feel music is very slowly going downhill.
Have enjoyed the commentary on all songs though, so great work there AuspOp!

Great song! But it’s quite complex, musically speaking, so it probably went over a lot of people’s heads.
