What a full-on time we had traversing through all the tracks we thought worthy of a mention as part of this year’s batch of our favourite pop songs. Which to keep in the top ten. Which to drop back into the “also-ran” section that we call our ‘Honourable Mentions’ section (there are some great pop songs here this year). Who to be in our top three! All will be revealed in the days leading up to New Years Eve, when we’ll reveal who pipped all comers to nab our pop song of the year for 2012.
But for now, here comes our No.10!
‘Gotcha’ was one out of the box for fans of former ‘Idol’ starlet Jessica Mauboy. Perhaps they were still fatigued or burned by the ‘Get ‘Em Girls’ project, perhaps they were expecting more of the same copycat dance/R&B that her peers were churning out… whatever the reason, criminally ‘Gotcha’ failed to fire at media and at retail.
This was Jess growing up and stepping out into a bold, stylish new musical sphere – and from the looks of the clip, having oodles of fun while doing it.
Infused with soul, cheek and plenty of sass, we’d love to see Jess doing more of this kind of stuff in the future.
Yes, pop kids, our No.10 Pop Song Of 2012 is Jess Mauboy’s ‘Gotcha’.

Absolutely – song didn’t do all that well but it has to be said that the album reached number 1 (I’m pretty sure?) which is her first number 1 album! Granted it wasn’t ‘her’ album but she featured on most tracks. Looking forward to more Jess in 2013.

I hope Call Me Maybe is number 1

Love this track! I agree that it was underrated on the singles chart, but you could argue it was helping the album to succeed so well.

I’d never paid any attention to Jessica Mauboy before but I recently had the immense pleasure of having her on a flight I was working on and she (and her crew) were absolutely charming and lovely. Have since checked out some of her works and am rather impressed. Top chick. :) – Mac.

Unfortunately not a big fan of this one. Hopefully there are some good Brit Pop tracks in the top 10!

Cannot wait for Jess to return with a new album.

This is one of my favourite songs from Jess. Yes! I agree, she should make more songs like this. But I don’t think Sony would allow her to keep making songs like this if it means she will flop.
Gotcha peaked at #43 on the ARIA Singles Chart.

I still hear this on radio constantly. Took awhile to grow on me
