Once again we’ve left it a few weeks in between drinks with our fabulous Free Track Friday feature. If you don’t know what Free Track Friday is all about, it’s essentially a collection of tunes we’re sent by labels, artists and publicists from across the globe that they’re offering up as free and legal downloads. And we tally ’em all up and pass them onto you.
So here’s your first February fling with Free Track Friday. Downloading fingers at the ready…
• PARACHUTE YOUTH : Count To Ten (Caseno Remix)
Adelaide/Sydney outfit Parachute Youth concluded calendar year 2012 by notching up the most played track for the year on Triple J (‘Can’t Get Better Than This’), subsequently placing at No.33 on the station’s Hottest 100 count for the year. The band (Matt K Von and Jonny Castro) also released their new single ‘Count To Ten’.
Fast forward to 2013 and Parachute Youth are on the verge of releasing two remix EPs of the track (out February 22) with a selection of the remixes whipped up by their labelmates Caseno. The almost five minute Caseno remix of ‘Count To Ten’ is a lush, smooth and dreamy soundscape which will no doubt see plenty more action on the airwaves of our national broadcasted. And they’re giving it away FREE! Bag it HERE. You want to. It’s brilliant.
• AVICII : Fade Into Darkness (Black Matter Remix)
So of course you know the 2011 Avicii single ‘Fade Into Darkness’ – a club banger that began life as the instrumental track ‘Penguin’ and later went on to feature as part of Leona Lewis’ dancefloor experiment ‘Collide’. Well 23 year old US DJ Black Matter has got his mitts on it, given it the ol’ EDM lick of paint (thus dragging it further into the ‘now’) and has decided to offer it up as a free download to all and sundry. What a very generous chap he is. So as part of this week’s Free Track Friday, here’s his rather tasty take on Avicii’s ‘Fade Into Darkness’ – totes free. HERE.
• ORVILLE KLINE : Fire Fight
While Orville Kline might not be known widely outside his home town of Chicago, his DJ talents have taken him across the length and breadth of the United States – from California to Florida, Colorado to Michigan and everywhere in between. Most recently, he’s been the resident DJ at a regular party night in Chicago called ‘Porn And Chicken’. As you do. And he’s just whipped up and spread his wings with this beefy, banging piece of instrumental dubstep called ‘Fire Fight’. While it might not be to everyone’s tastes, we reckon it’s best enjoyed loud. Download free HERE.
• VANGUARD : Goodbye
The gang at Germany’s Conzoom Records has been in touch with us, spruiking the sparkly electropop goodness of Swedish duo Vanguard. The group, made up of Jonas Olofsson and Patrik Hansson, have been slowly but surely honing their craft across the past five years and have recently released their debut single ‘Goodbye’ and an album via iTunes worldwide. To celebrate the release of ‘Goodbye’, the Conzoom team is allowing you to download the tune free via their website (albeit after a little registration process). If you love your electro-pop with a slightly alt-indie edge, you might just like to check the track out HERE.
• DAS KAPITAL : Brainbang
From Chicago, then to Sweden via Germany, now it’s off to South Africa where 21 year old Cape Town native Das Kapital (aka Kyle Brinkmann) has just released his debut EP entitled ‘Free Trades’ (cover image pictured). Like the guys of Vanguard (above), he’s celebrating the release of the EP by giving away a track from it free of charge. Said tune is called ‘Brainbang’ and it’s been vocalled by an up and coming UK MC by the name of Louis Blaise. It’s an experimental electro piece filled with looped vocal samples and what his publicists describe as “distorted 808s, warm synths and twisted drums”. Download HERE.
• THE KUHLS : Leaving The Prairie
Another track on this week’s Free Track Friday that may be a slightly acquired taste. Chicago-based siblings Renee and Grace Kuhl produce music that straddles the blues, country and rock genres – and while the production values on their track ‘Leaving The Prairie’ may be a little crude compared to the tunes you’ll hear on the charts, what gives this track a little added sunshine is the girls’ gorgeous vocals and harmonies. The song is the highlight track from The Kuhls’ new album ‘Holy Rollin’ and you can listen to the album and download ‘Leaving The Prairie’ free by hitting up their Bandcamp page HERE.
And that’s your lot this time around. Keep your eyes peeled for our next exciting instalment of Free Track Friday. In the meantime, have yourself a brilliant weekend.
