Oh yes, she’s back… Free Track Friday has returned with another bunch of fabulous free tunes that will perhaps form the soundtrack to your weekend. And there’s some true goodies in here – Rihanna remix, Jimi Hendrix sample, a Lana Del Rey remix, a splash of ’90s soul… It’s like a pick’n’mix of styles with something bound to suit pretty much every taste. But it’s the lead download we’re most excited about. Welcome to Free Track Friday. And get your downloadin’ fingers limbered up ’cause it all starts here…;
• CRYWOLF & IANBORG : Oceans
Oooh gosh we’re liking this. North Carolina native Crywolf has carved out an incredibly alluring piece of alt-electro pop, with delicious whispered vocals, smooth electro production laced with punchy beats and bubbles that serves as the lead single from his forthcoming EP called ‘Ghosts’. Vocally similar to Adam Young of Owl City fame, the combination of sweet vocals and class production really gels with us and if it’s any indication of what’s to come from the EP (which is due to drop next month), then we can’t wait to hear more. Download away HERE.
• LANA DEL REY : Summertime Sadness (Adam Freeland mix)
Okay, so ‘Summertime Sadness’ by US singer songwriter Lana Del Rey isn’t particularly new (it was lifted from her album ‘Born To Die’ and was a hit in parts of Europe), but up’s popped this rather intriguing little remix by Brighton UK-based producer Adam Freeland. Adam’s career trajectory continues on its upward journey and this remix of ‘Summertime Sadness’, which he’s offering up as a free download, is certainly going to do him no harm in getting noticed. Fresh, spiky electronica with a free download to boot? Count us in. Download with a simple ‘Like’ HERE.
• MONTELL JORDAN : This Is How We Do It (Viceroy Jet Life remix)
US R&B singer Montell Jordan really hit the big time with his debut single ‘This Is How We Do It’. Released back in 1995, the single shot to No.1 on the US Billboard charts, narrowly missing the top ten over in the UK and hitting the top ten down under. And though the singer’s not experienced the same No.1 success since, he went on to enjoy a swathe of chart successes throughout the latter part of the ’90s. Now remixed by one of our favourites in Viceroy, it’s available as a free download for a short time. Viceroy tells us that we might even expect Montell on Aussie shores soon for live shows. Download away HERE.
If you couldn’t get enough of Philadelphia-based songstress Joy Ike last time she shared a freebie with us (that would be the last edition of Free Track Friday), she’s at it again with a track called ‘Time’, lifted from the singer’s new album ‘All Or Nothing’, which was released late in January. The LP is available via iTunes here in Australia and where the previous track offered up for download was summery and bright, ‘Time’ takes the tempo down, strips the production right back and allows Joy’s voice to do the shining. It’s as rich as caramel sauce, buttery soft and incredibly sweet. Take a listen and download free HERE.
• ALL THAT GLITTERS : This Sound (Sunday Funday remix)
Back last year, the gang at Ministry Of Sound introduced us to the club/pop delights of superstar new outfit All That Glitters. Comprised of Peter Mayes (of PNAU), Mark Alston and Polina, the trio’s single ‘This Sound’ was super-assured, super-slick dance/pop. One listen and we were hooked. So it’s with much excitement that we were sent this free remix of the track by Melbourne DJs Dom Dolla and Vedran (aka Sunday Funday), who’ve whipped the track into a club-styled frenzy. Your six plus minute weekend anthem is FREE to a good home HERE.
• RIHANNA FTG. MIKKY EKKO : Stay (Carlos Cid remix)
Given that Rihanna’s latest single ‘Stay’ is currently sitting in the top five on the ARIA singles chart – and the fact that tickets for her upcoming Australian tour went on sale this morning, we’d bet there might be a little bit of interest in this free remix of the track courtesy of New York-based produced Carlos Cid. Carlos has been making quite the name for himself working alongside Mister Cedric Gervais (‘Molly’) on his Miamification Project, so Rihanna’s single is certainly in good hands. Another lil’ freebie that you’ll need to click ‘Like’ on Facebook to get your mitts on, but we have a feeling you won’t be disappointed. HERE.
• PRETTY LIGHTS FTG. JIMI HENDRIX : Finally Moving (Lance Herbstrong remix)
Right, so bear with us while we try to get our heads around this. Lance Herbstrong is a collective of three musicians (Kamal Soliman, Bill Sarver and Peter DiStefano) from Texas. Pretty Lights is the performance moniker of Colorado-based producer Derek Vincent Smith. So from what we can ascertain, Lance Herbstrong loved Pretty Lights’ track ‘Finally Moving’, but thought it would lend itself to a sample of Jimi Hendrix’ version of Bob Dylan’s ‘All Along The Watchtower’. So it was added. Then they added a little snippet of Etta James over-used ‘Good feeling’ sample from ‘Something’s Got A Hold On Me’, but toyed with the idea of taking it out. Mixed all together in a bowl and bake for 30 minutes in a moderate oven and it’s a rather tasty mid-tempo free treat HERE.
And that’s your lot for this week’s Free Track Friday. There’s more fabulous freebies coming at you most soon, so keep your peepers peeled. Until then, have yourself a brilliant weekend with all this newly discovered tune.
