If we didn’t feel slightly old before, we certainly do now, with news that the Backstreet Boys will celebrate their 20th anniversary this weekend.
The gents (Howie, Nick, AJ, Kevin and Brian) will mark the magic milestone late tomorrow local time, with a countdown clock on their website pointing to the date they first came together in April 1993. Later in the day, they’ll play a special free concert for their most ardent fans at the Fonda Theatre in Los Angeles.
They’ll also give the audience a taste of new music, as well as showcasing a clip from an upcoming documentary.
On Monday, the boys will receive a long overdue star on Hollywood’s Walk Of Fame.
The boys have also revealed a 20th Anniversary Megamix (below).

“Backstreet Boys first entered the charts in 1995 via their debut single ‘We Got It Goin’ On’, but it wasn’t until the following year that they hit the big time in the US via their fourth single ‘Quit Playing Games (With My Heart)’. Here in Australia, it was single No.2 (‘I’ll Never Break Your Heart’) that gave them their first taste of top ten success down under.”
This is wrong.
In the US, “Quit Playing Games (With My Heart)” was their second single. The first was “We’ve Got It Goin’ On” near the end of 1995, which did little (it reached #69 on the Billboard Hot 100), and then “Quit Playing Games” was released as their second US single in May 1997.
In Australia, they had at least six singles prior to “I’ll Never Break Your Heart”:
1. “We’ve Got It Goin’ On”, which entered the ARIA top 100 in April 1996 and reached #89, then re-entered in December 1996 and reached #74
2. “Get Down (You’re The One For Me)”, which reached #44 in November 1996
3. “Quit Playing Games (With My Heart)”, which reached #27 in May 1997
4. “Everybody (Backstreet’s Back)”, which reached #3 in December 1997
5. “As Long As You Love Me”, which reached #2 in January 1998
6. “All I Have To Give”, which reached #4 in March 1998
And then “I’ll Never Break Your Heart”, which reached #10 in September 1998.
Seems like you retrieved your info from their discography on Wikipedia, which lists their early singles in order of original European release. Better luck next time!

“I’ll Never Break Your Heart” was actually their seventh single in Australia, as it wasn’t released here until the end of 1998, several years into their first wave of success (they’d had three Top 10 singles, including the #2 hit “As Long As You Love Me”, before “I’ll Never Break Your Heart” was released). Their first Top 40 hit in Australia was “Quit Playing Games” and their first Top 10 was “Everybody”. “Get Down” also scraped into the Top 50 when it was released. Wikipedia can be misleading sometimes :-)
