Look out! It’s five weeks today that the final of the Eurovision Song Contest will be run and won in Sweden.
Entrants from 39 countries across the continent will be in fierce competition for the most coveted yearly prize in music – the Eurovision Song Contest trophy.
As always, the competition is split into three finals; the two semi finals (to be held on May 14 and 16) and the grand final (on May 18), in which the victorious countries from the two semi-finals will line up alongside the host nation Sweden and the “big five” of the UK, France, Germany, Italy and Spain.
In our ninth story on this year’s finalists, we turn our compass towards Russia.
DINA GARIPOVA : What If
It’s become a bit of a tradition over recent years for countries to source their Eurovision contestants from a recent season of a reality TV competition.
Russia is adding to the former reality TV mix this year with Dina, who won last year’s edition of ‘The Voice, Golos’. She’s just 22 years of age, but having gone through the experience of live performance on ‘The Voice’, we’re sure adding a few million people into the mix around Europe will be a complete cinch.
And she’s got a gorgeous track with which to do it. ‘What If’ is a song about overcoming differences, ending wars and hatred and coming together as one. Somewhat predictable, yes, but Dina’s vocals are gorgeous, we love the construction of the song, we love the key change and we reckon it’s in with a good shot. The added cheering sound effects towards the end of the clip (below), however, you can keep.
