In just eight days, the first Eurovision Song Contest semi final hits Sweden and the people of Europe will be glued to their TV sets to see who’ll have the chance to make it through.
All eyes will be firmly affixed on the Swedish city of Malmö, as 39 countries from across the region compete for the most coveted prize in music – the Eurovision trophy.
As always, the competition is split into three finals; the two semi finals (to be held on May 14 and 16) and the grand final (on May 18), in which the victorious countries from the two semi-finals will line up alongside the host nation Sweden and the “big five” of the UK, France, Germany, Italy and Spain.
Speaking of the “big five”, Italy plays a part and therefore Marco Mengoni’s track won’t get its chance to shine ’til Saturday week’s Grand Final.
MARCO MENGONI : L’Essenziale
Italy’s decided to go down the reality TV show winner route in 2013, gifting their Eurovision representation to the 2009 winner of their country’s ‘X Factor’ Marco Mengoni. After a swag of successful singles and two No.1 albums, he went to last year’s Sanremo Music Festival with his single ‘L’Essenziale’ (‘The Essential’), winning the competition and subsequently being selected to represent Italy at Eurovision. No ‘money notes’ or key changes to speak of here, but a handsome super-cool cat with a stirring pop ballad that’s one of this year’s top ten favourites.
