The boys from US duo MKTO have enjoyed significant local success with their debut single ‘Thank You’. Eleven weeks after bursting onto the ARIA singles chart, it’s still in the top ten and so far has been certified double platinum.
But there’s seemingly plenty more where that came from, with another single and a debut album on the horizon.
So in our first Q&A of 2013, we put a series of questions to Mister Tony Oller (he on the right) to find out how he and Malcolm have reacted to their success down under and what to expect next.
Q : How does it feel to have a debut single that’s resonated with an Aussie audience? It’s amazing!
A : Never thought the response would be so big!!! We’re both very excited!!
Q : What is it about ‘Thank You’ that you reckon we Aussies connected with?
A : It’s about a generation coming together. I think that’s what people like about it.
Q : It has quite a political message behind it – a middle finger to the establishment, if you will… Who was your intended target?
A : Well each song is a story, but in this case it was more a middle finger to anyone who says you can’t do something. On the political side each generation is gonna have the kids that say it was their fault. We will get it when we are older too but of course certain stuff can always be handled differently to not put our generation in certain places.
Q : You got noticed after uploading tracks to YouTube – it seems that’s becoming ‘the’ place to be discovered these days. What advice would you have for fledgling artists wanting to get noticed, given you guys have already made it?
A : I always say the best thing you can do is practice hard, upload as much content as you can and keep doing it. At the end of the day it’s all up to fate. If it’s supposed to happen it will happen.
Q : Do you believe your past high profile acting roles helped you attract the attention of your producers Emanuel and Evan?
A : I think they saw the chemistry between me n Malcolm n had a vision that we shared in common with them. The acting side was just a plus :)
Q : The acting background certainly pays dividends in the music vid…
A : Hahaha thanks?
Q : If you had to choose between acting and music, where would your heart take you?
A : Right now my heart’s all about music.
Q : What can we expect from your debut album ‘Role Models’?
A : If it’s called that which we think it might be. Expect the unexpected :)
Q : Apparently the lead single isn’t completely indicative of the rest of the LP stylistically…?
A : It’s all diverse.
Q : When can we expect the album to drop?
A : Hopefully end of this year!
Q : Can we expect to see you here anytime soon for some live shows?
A : Very soon!
Q : Do you have a message for your Australian fans?
A : Thank you so much to everyone supporting us. Yalls support has made our dreams come true and we can’t wait to get back out there!
