It’s a massive day for the team at the ARIA today, with their weekly ARIA charts celebrating their 30th anniversary.
The first official ARIA charts were published back in 1983, with Bonnie Tyler’s ‘Total Eclipse Of The Heart’ atop the singles chart and Michael Jackson’s ‘Thriller’ on top of the first ARIA albums chart.
ARIA has gone on to publish more than 1500 weekly charts comprising 440 No.1 singles and 527 No.1 albums.
ARIA Chairman Denis Handlin was instrumental in the creation of the ARIA charts 30 years ago and has seen them evolve as the music industry changed.
“The ARIA Charts were created for artists, record companies, publishers, songwriters, retailers and fans to know what is going on with music sales right across the country,” he said in a statement. “Over the years as the market has diversified, ARIA has developed a wide range of charts from the National Singles and Albums Charts to country, dance, urban, digital streaming and other genres as a part of its industry information services.
“The history of the singles and albums captured by the ARIA Charts not only represents brilliant recorded music but also the soundtrack to our lives.”
And across the three decades and that soundtrack, there have been a number of incredible achievements by a number of incredible artists. Here are some of the stats that ARIA has revealed to co-incide with today’s anniversary;
